Features of Panic Disorder
Many individuals with Panic Disorder report constant or intermittent feelings of anxiety that are not situation or event specific. Or they may become extremely apprehensive about the outcome of routine activities and experiences, particularly about health issues or separation from family/loved ones. Their worry and anxiety may result in anticipation of catastrophic outcomes for mild physical ailments (i.e. fear that a headache indicates a brain tumor) or a fear of medication side effects.
Panic Disorder is estimated to affect about three million American adults, most likely developing in the late teens or early to mid twenties. Panic disorder is a chronic, sometimes debilitating condition that can have devastating effects on an individuals quality of life. It often goes undiagnosed because the symptoms can be so varied; however, when diagnosed correctly, panic disorder is highly treatable. Panic Disorder can resemble other medical conditions such as myocardial infarction, cardiac arrhythmias, or certain types of epilepsy. You should have a complete medical examination to consider and rule out any medical conditions that could be contributing to your symptoms.
The good news is that panic disorder is highly treatable, when diagnosed correctly. It is reported that appropriate treatment can reduce or completely prevent panic attacks in 70 90% of sufferers, particularly when panic disorder is recognized early. However, symptoms will tend to worsen over time if appropriate treatment is not provided.
Because
the symptoms are so varied, it is important to distinguish
panic disorder from everyday anxiety and stress. To
do this, consider a thorough medical evaluation to
rule out any medical causes for the reported symptoms.
