Moses Cone-Wesley Long Foundation Awards Family Service of the Piedmont $100,000 Grant

GREENSBORO, NC—Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation has awarded Family Service of the Piedmont a $100,000 grant renewable for up to three years to fund an anticipated increase in uninsured and underinsured clients seeking mental health services from the agency.

Family Service of the Piedmont serves a vital niche in the community through its Counseling Fee Assistance Plan, which allows uninsured or underinsured clients to receive its Family Counseling Service at a subsidized rate. The percentage of clients using the Counseling Fee Assistance Plan—which last year accounted for 44% of counseling clients—is expected to climb due to the new State Mental Health Plan.

This State Mental Health Plan, now in its first year of implementation, shifts mental health services for children and adults from the public to the private sectors. Locally, this means that the Guilford Center is phasing out most direct services to clients, leaving Family Service as the only major provider of mental health services in Guilford County that sees clients regardless of their ability to pay.

“Serving everyone regardless of their ability to pay has been a cornerstone of our mission since our founding in 1945,” said Julia Nile, President/CEO of Family Service. “The funding from Moses-Cone/Wesley Long will allow us to help more local individuals and families who do not have health insurance, are not eligible for Medicaid or do not have sufficient income to pay the normal fees for counseling themselves.”

Family Service of the Piedmont’s Family Counseling Service provides individual, couples and family counseling for children, adolescents and adults. Last year, 2442 individuals were served through the program. In addition to counseling, Family Service provides victim services, credit and budget counseling, and community-based programs and education to build safe and healthy families in Guilford County.

The Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation's mission is to invest in the development and support of activities, programs and organizations that measurably improve the health of people in the geographic area traditionally served by the Moses Cone Health System.
