Family Service of High Point Foundation Throws Pearl of Event

HIGH POINT, NC—The Annual High Point Oyster Roast 2005 drew 310 people to the home of Cindy and Kerry Rice on the evening of March 5. Cindy Rice also served as the chair of the Oyster Roast Committee. The event benefited Family Service of High Point Foundation, which helps fund services and programs in High Point provided by Family Service of the Piedmont.

Guests enjoyed oysters and other edibles from Pepper Moon Catering and MoTown, beach and pop tunes performed by the Keith Byrd Band.

Lin Amos, former board chair of Family Service of High Point, started the Oyster Roast in High Point 11 years ago. Several factors have made the event a consistent success:

- Host couple concept — The Oyster Roast committee solicits community members to serve as host couples. Their names are listed on the invitation, encouraging friends and acquaintances to attend. This year’s event boasted 152 host couples and 14 individual hosts.

- The “come as you are” concept — While many other local fundraisers are formal, Oyster Roast features a relaxed atmosphere where attendees can dress in more casual attire.

- Corporate sponsorships— Special thanks to the event’s Gold Sponsors: Cedar Creek Corporation, Dixon Hughes PLLC and Sterling Financial Services. Bank of America, High Point Bank and Trust and IH Caffey Distribution served as Silver Sponsors. The Bronze Sponsors were Breece Enterprises, Inc., Coldwell Banker Triad Realtors, High Point Regional Health System, Ilderton Dodge Chrysler Jeep, and Wachovia Securities.

- The host homes — This year’s event was held on the Rices’ 20-acre property, which not only includes their residence but also a working horse farm. Past home hosts have included Marsha and Jack Slane, and Mariana and Nido Qubein.

Oyster Roast Chair Cindy Rice was assisted by her committee, which included: Beth Breece, co-chair elect, Kathy Caffey (co-chair elect), Emilee Brigman, Melissa Calabrese, Leslie Culp, Mary Keever, Gina Laney, Sarah Lytle (who drew the artwork for the invitations), Christi Morgan, Kathleen Morgan, Maria Puschinsky, Lesley Rosser, Shelly Richardson, Jeanie Spillers (in charge of corporate sponsors), Condon Smith, Ashley Stevens and Ann Weiland.

Paula Noe, Gretchen Owen and Jackie Powers served on the committee in charge of the beautifully whimsical spring-themed centerpieces, composed of flowering plants, birdseed, seed packets and miniature clay pots.
