FAMILY SERVICE RALLIES COMMUNITY AROUND ISSUE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Did you know studies show that one in four women will be abused by a partner in her lifetime? You, your mother…sister…daughter or friend may be a victim of domestic violence. As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Family Service of the Piedmont hosted two lunchtime events called “Voices Against Violence,” outside the courthouses in High Point (Oct. 12) and Greensboro (Oct. 19).
Live entertainment was provided by Collective, a local group of artists who performed spoken word pieces as well as songs related to the issue of domestic violence. Passersby were invited to pick up brochures and purple ribbons—the symbol for Domestic Violence Awareness Month—and enjoy free food and drinks supplied by area vendors. Victim Services staff members were on hand to speak to people about available services at the agency for victims and perpetrators. At one of the events, Family Service Court Advocate Julie Avery actually accompanied a woman into court and then provided safety planning after she revealed she was trying to escape an abusive relationship.
