FAMILY SERVICE RECOGNIZES ROBERT HAGER AND CARROLL ANN MILLER WITH JULIA B. NILE FOR LOVE OF FAMILY AWARDS
SEDGEFIELD, NC—The two foundations of Family Service of the Piedmont, Inc. honored Robert Hager and Carroll Ann Miller with the newly renamed Julia B. Nile For Love of Family Awards at its Annual Meeting today, held at Sedgefield Country Club.
The Julia B. Nile For Love of Family Award represents the highest honor given to individuals from Greensboro and High Point who make a significant impact on Family Service of the Piedmont and their community in helping to build safe and healthy families. It was recently renamed after Julia B. Nile, who retired last month after 16 years as President/CEO of the agency.
Family Service of High Point Foundation, Inc. Chair Jef Morgan presented the award to Carroll Ann Miller, to recognize her longtime support to the agency through board leadership and fundraising roles.
Miller became a member of the Family Service of High Point board in 1993, serving as treasurer the following year, and then as vice chair in 1995. She chaired the board in 1996, during the agency’s Capital Campaign to build Carpenter House shelter for battered women and children.
Miller joined the board of Family Service of the Piedmont in 1999, serving as vice chair in 2002, chair in 2003, and two terms as nominating chair. As chair, Miller was quoted as saying her vision for the agency was “that we have the financial resources to make ourselves available to every person who needs our help.”
Over the years, Miller has personally contributed to building financial resources not only through her and her husband Jeff’s generous gifts but also through the Carpenter House Capital Campaign and a decade of soliciting host couples as an active member of the Oyster Roast committee.
“Carroll Ann’s such a wonderful ambassador for Family Service,” said Family Service of the Piedmont Board Member Linda Ilderton. “She believes in helping to build safe and healthy families. It’s her philosophy with her own family, and that passion extends to helping other families in our community as well.”
In addition to her long list of accomplishments at Family Service, Miller has been a vital volunteer in many other High Point organizations, including holding a host of different roles at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Westchester Academy, Junior League of High Point, her alma mater Wake Forest University and the High Point Children’s Cabinet.
“Carroll Ann Miller is one of the brightest people I know,” said Family Service of High Point Foundation Trustee, Jeff Horney, who has worked alongside Miller on the board of Family Service and other organizations. “She consistently knows the right questions to ask and is very tenacious in a quiet, disarming way. She is always good humored and gracious …and never seeking the spotlight, but so deserving of it.”
Sunny Lawson, chair of Family & Children’s Service of Greater Greensboro Foundation, Inc. presented Robert Hager with the Julia B. Nile For Love of Family Award to recognize many years of service to the agency and his important role in the affiliation of the Greensboro and High Point agencies to become Family Service of the Piedmont in 1999.
Hager’s involvement with Family Service began in 1992, when two work associates invited him to join the board. His first leadership roles were with Family & Children’s Service of Greater Greensboro, serving as co-vice chair in 1995 and treasurer in 1997 and 1998.
One of his most important roles at the agency was as a member of the Affiliation Steering Committee, serving on the Strategic Planning Subcommittee. He later served as chair of the Board’s Governance Structure Committee.
“Robert was very committed to making the affiliation happen,” said past Julia B. Nile For Love of Family Award Winner and current board member Sally Weeks. “Robert also has a fun sense of humor and a cute laugh. He used both to remind us to keep the big picture in front of us and not get bogged down in the things that didn't matter.”
After the affiliation of Family & Children’s Service with Family Service of High Point, Hager served on the Family & Children’s Service of Greater Greensboro Foundation Board through 2004, holding the positions of treasurer, vice chair, chair and investment chair during that time. He also served on the Family Service of the Piedmont Board, including a stint as treasurer.
Throughout the years Hager and his wife Marilyn also have been loyal supporters to the agency’s various fundraising campaigns.
Beyond Family Service, Hager is active in family ministries at his church, USTA tennis and the Greensboro Merchants Association, where he presently serves as retail chair.
“With no fanfare Robert lives his life to the betterment of all who come in contact with him: his employees, his church, his community, his family, his friends,” said Mike Smith, who served with Hager on the agency’s board. “If a person needs a helping hand or encouragement, you can count on Robert to do what he can.”
