Introduction

Community Resource Development, rooted in support to families, is a process in which communities of families develop their own leadership, improve their access to services, and build on their strengths by continually assessing their needs and delivering educational program on-site. The Family Resource Center is one aspect of Community Resource Development. The Family Resource Center is the site that houses the educational materials and supplies for the specified neighborhood.

Some of the needs already being met through Community Resource Development are forming a Neighborhood Crime Watch, establishing after-school programs, developing programs for the youth in the community, and forming parenting classes.

The mission of Community Resource Development is to engage the community and build on existing strengths to promote strong families, healthy children, and caring communities. Family Service of the Piedmont provides the staff to coordinate the development of Community Resource Development within communities.

Characteristics of Community Resource Development
Governed for and by families in the neighborhood
Serves as an administrative hub
Reflects neighborhood need and makes use of neighborhood resources
Connects families with agencies, services, and resources through a staff coordinator from Family Service
Serves the entire family regardless of income
Emphasizes prevention
Provides opportunities for training and education
Serves as a family support and offers long-term solutions to problems

As a means of meeting neighborhood needs, Community Resource Development services and activities are scheduled at times most convenient to resident families. Dedicated community residents who volunteer and are committed to making a difference in their community operate activities. Insofar as services and activities require funding, partnerships with public and private agencies are important to the process.
